Founded in October 1861 by Ishmael Lythgoe, Agecroft Rowing Club grew from the gradual merging of rowing clubs based on the River Irwell. Its first boathouse, in the grounds of Agecroft Hall, was swept away in the floods of 1866. The club operates from Salford Quays and hosts the Agecroft Head, a winter race of about 3.2km on the River Irwell. Its wins at Henley Royal Regatta include the Queen Mother Challenge Cup in 2014, 2015 and 2018 and the Diamond Challenge Sculls in 2021, which Graeme Thomas won. Olivia Whitlam, who trained through the club's GB Start scheme, represented Great Britain at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
